Parent Coordinator

Dear Parents and School Community,

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Martha Jimenez, and I am grateful to be serving the PS 16 community for the past fifteen years as your Parent Coordinator.

During these years I have had the opportunity to service many families supporting their student's academic paths, and I have supported both teachers and staff members to strengthen home-school communication.

My journey in PS 16 has had many faces, and if you would allow me, I will briefly share this journey with you.

I was born in Mexico City where I obtained a Psychology degree and license from the National University of Mexico (UNAM). When I immigrated into the US, I obtained a master's degree in Counseling and Human Services from Leigh University, in Bethlehem, PA. The education I received provided me with the skills and knowledge to be of service in my role as Parent Coordinator by practicing active listening, being empathic and being able to direct families to the resources they may need to support their children at all levels, including collaborating with CBOs, elected officials, cultural venues and partners. Most importantly, my education journey made me fall in love with learning, making me a life-long learner, and acknowledging that there is always room for growth and self-improvement.

As an immigrant, ESL speaker and initially new to the school system when I started at my current position, I have several attributes in common with many parents in our school community. In addition, and probably most important, I am the proud parent of two former PS 16 students who are now young adults and the products of the hard work and dedication of wonderful teachers. I couldn't be prouder of them.

My heart is deeply rooted in PS 16Q. It is clear to me that the education process, both academically and socio-emotionally speaking, formally begins at the elementary school level. The role that parents and teachers have is invaluable, especially at this stage. I feel grateful for having the opportunity to be an active participant in the vision that Ms.Rodriguez, our Acting Principal, has developed for our school.

l am inviting all parents to actively participate in all the events and opportunities that our school provides to support your student's academic success. Please join in our efforts to ensure that every single student has open pathways to college and career readiness, and to face the challenges in a successful and healthy way.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey. I am looking forward to meeting you all.

In gratitude,

Martha Jimenez
